2.3 Runner Guidelines

Runners in the Gaoligong Ultra must adhere to the following requirements and ensure:

· A full understanding of the total distance and conditions of their registered race category and thorough preparation accordingly.

· The ability of self-support while in mountainous terrain, managing the risks associated with the race, including but not limited to:

Knowledge of how to handle extreme weather conditions without external assistance, such as nighttime cold, high temperatures, strong winds, thunderstorms, dense fog, rain, or snow.

The ability to manage physical or psychological issues that may arise, including altitude sickness, extreme fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, muscle or joint pain, and minor ailments, even when running alone.

An understanding that safety in such events is determined by the runner's ability to adapt and manage foreseeable issues.

Acknowledgment that the race organizers provide only limited assistance to overcome these challenges.

A commitment to respecting nature, all event staff, and strict adherence to race regulations, fully accepting and complying with all rules.

The ability to receive race-related information via email subscriptions and SMS notifications.

2.4 Semi-Autonomy Principle

Independent, semi-autonomy is a fundamental principle of this race. Gaoligong Ultra is a trail-running event conducted along premier hiking routes in Tengchong and Gaoligong Mountains. Each race category has its own significance and unique experience, requiring runners to adopt different race strategies and pacing to complete the event within the designated time.

Definition of Semi-Autonomy

Semi-Autonomy means that runners must be able to sustain themselves between aid stations. This includes not only food provisions but also proper clothing and safety preparedness. Runners should have the ability to adapt to challenges they may encounter, including extreme weather conditions, physical discomfort, or injuries.

This principle is embedded in the following rules:

· Mandatory Equipment:

All runners must carry their mandatory equipment throughout the race (refer to the Mandatory Equipment List). Race backpacks containing the mandatory equipment will be tagged during bib collection and cannot be changed during the race. Race officials may inspect backpacks, including weight and contents, at any time.

All runners must comply with inspections in a respectful manner; failure to do so may result in disqualification.

The race committee will provide beverages and food at designated aid stations for on-site consumption. Regular drinking water or energy drinks will be available for refilling personal hydration packs or bottles. Upon leaving each aid station, runners must ensure they have enough water and food to sustain themselves until the next aid station.

· Assistance Stations:

MGU (168 km): Runners may receive external assistance only at CP4 (Long Wen Qiao), CP7 (Da Hao Ping), CP9 (San Jie Bei), CP12 (Qiao Jie Cun), and CP15 (Sha Ba Lin Chang).

RCE (120 km): Runners may receive external assistance only at CP4 (Long Wen Qiao), CP7 (Da Hao Ping), and CP11 (Sha Ba Lin Chang).

Assistance is permitted only with prior approval from the aid station supervisor.

Assistance must be provided in a designated area and may be given by only one person.

The assistant may not use specialized equipment and is limited to carrying one backpack with a maximum capacity of 30 liters.

Assistance from professional teams, medical personnel not associated with the race, or emergency response personnel is strictly prohibited.

Assistance outside of designated aid stations, including on the race route, is strictly forbidden.

No assistance allowed for THT (55 km), TCZ (35 km), and GEP (16 km): Runners in these categories are prohibited from receiving any external assistance throughout the race.

Important Notice: Receiving assistance at non-designated aid stations violates the semi-autonomy principle. The race committee reserves the right to impose penalties for such violations to uphold the integrity of the race.

3. Competition Rules

The competition rules are established to ensure the safety, order, and regulation of the event while maintaining fairness, impartiality, and transparency. These rules apply to all categories of the 2025 ANTA GUANUN Tengchong Gaoligong Ultra. The organizing committee reserves the right to establish, modify, and enforce these rules, and all runners must fully understand and comply with them.

3.1 Timing and Results

· Timing Chip

The event will use a chip timing system. The timing chip is the official device for recording individual results. Runners must ensure their bibs containing the timing chip are worn on the front of their body in a clearly visible position. Runners will bear responsibility for any missing results due to obstruction of the timing chip.

Timing Checkpoints

Runners must pass through all designated timing checkpoints during the race. Missing a timing checkpoint will result in exclusion from ranking, and in severe cases, disqualification. In addition to the announced timing checkpoints, the committee may set up temporary timing checkpoints along the course. These will also be used to verify race results.

Missing Results

If missing results are caused by factors outside the runner’s control, a request for result correction may be submitted with valid proof within 24 hours after the race cutoff time. After this period, no further result correction requests will be accepted.

Ranking Rules

a. Official rankings for all categories are based on net time.

b. Runners must start within 15 minutes after their designated start time. Those failing to cross the start line within this period will be considered withdrawn from the race.

c. Rankings will be provided for:

Each category in general

Male and female rankings within each category

Age group rankings (by gender) in the following divisions:

§ A: 20–39 years old

§ B: 40–49 years old

§ C: 50–59 years old

§ D: 60 years and older

d. The top male and female runners in each age group will receive additional awards.

Special Ranking and Award Rules

a. If an emergency race route is activated, runners completing the alternate course will be ranked after those who completed the original course.

b. If the race is halted due to unforeseen circumstances, runners who have not completed the race will not be included in the final ranking.

c. The organizing committee reserves the right to adjust ranking and timing rules as necessary based on race conditions.

· Detailed Mandatory Equipment Regulations

Race Bib, Timing Chip, and Wristband

The race bib is an essential identifier for runners and must be worn at all times during the race. Failure to wear it properly will result in restricted access to race-related areas and possible disqualification.

The timing chip, pre-attached to the back of the bib, records official race times. It must not be removed, bent, or exposed to strong magnetic fields or high temperatures. Any damage to the chip may result in missing race results. The timing chip is a personal device for athletes to obtain their official results. During the race, please make sure to wear the bib visibly on the front of your body. Runners will be responsible for any missing results caused by covering the bib number (timing chip).

The race wristband is required for access to services such as shuttle transportation. Loss of the wristband will result in the runner forfeiting these benefits.

GPS Tracker

The GPS tracker is used for race timing, medical assistance, and safety monitoring. It allows emergency services to track runners in real time. Runners can use the SOS button on the GPS tracker for emergency rescue. Correct usage of this device is required.

Trail Backpack or Waist Pack

It must be able to accommodate all required mandatory equipment, water, and energy supplies. Runners must bring their race backpack or waist pack when collecting their race materials.

Survival Blanket

The emergency blanket size should not be smaller than 1.3m x 2.1m; the emergency blanket must be carried throughout the entire race. Runners need to understand the correct usage of the emergency blanket. The emergency blanket is made of non-biodegradable materials. After use, please do not discard or leave it on the race course. Be sure to carry it to the aid station for recycling.

Survival Whistle

The rescue whistle should be a high-frequency whistle and should only be used when encountering difficulties or needing assistance. A high-frequency rescue whistle can produce a highly penetrating sound with minimal energy. In case of an accident or when emergency assistance is needed, using the rescue whistle for help is beneficial for rescue personnel to detect danger in complex environments and locate the position of the athlete in distress.

Sealed Water Bottle or Hydration Bladder

A sealable water container or hydration bladder with a minimum capacity of 1L (excluding water bottles with lids or insulated cups) must be carried throughout the entire race. Runners may choose different types of water containers according to their drinking habits (such as hard water bottles, soft water bottles, or hydration bladders). The water container must be sealable, and its capacity must be equal to or greater than the required volume specified in the mandatory equipment regulations.

First Aid Kit

The contents of the first aid kit include, but are not limited to, elastic bandages and sterile dressings. Elastic bandages are used for local immobilization and pressure bandaging, with specifications of no less than 100cm x 5cm. Sterile dressings are primarily used for wound hemostasis and prevention of contamination, with specifications of no less than 10cm x 10cm. First aid supplies can be used for personal use or to assist other runners in need. First aid items may be used for personal injuries or to assist fellow runners.

Emergency Energy Food

During the race, runners must carry energy food with them that meets or exceeds the energy value required in the mandatory equipment list for their respective category. This emergency energy food is not intended for regular race nutrition but is designed to provide emergency energy to runners in case of unexpected situations, helping them maintain strength while waiting for rescue. Runners can choose emergency food according to their preferences, such as energy gels, energy bars, chocolate, or dried fruits. However, the packaging must clearly show the energy reference value. It is recommended to purchase individually packaged energy food products.

Smartphone and Power Bank

The phone number used by runners during the race must match the number provided in their registration information (international runners need to use phones with international roaming capabilities in China). Smartphones should have the ability to view officially released race tracks and provide navigation. Runners must ensure their phones remain in a contactable state throughout the race. The phone serves as a crucial link between the organizing committee and runners in case of emergencies. It's also an effective tool for runners to confirm their location if lost and to view official tracks. Runners should estimate their phone's power consumption and carry sufficient power banks to ensure their phones remain operational throughout the entire race.

Portable Water Container and Utensils

Aid stations along the race course do not provide disposable drinking containers or utensils. Runners need to prepare their own drinking containers and utensils.

Hooded Windproof and Waterproof Jacket

The hood must be an integral part of the jacket. The fabric should be waterproof, and all seams must be taped for waterproofing. A hooded, windproof, and waterproof jacket is effective equipment for dealing with adverse weather conditions such as rain, snow, and strong winds. It is recommended to use a product with a clearly marked waterproof rating of no less than 10,000mm. As the taped waterproof layer may deteriorate and lose its effectiveness over time, it is advisable to perform a waterproof test before use.

Long-Sleeve Thermal Top

Warm clothing is effective for preventing hypothermia. Carrying it with you at all times ensures maximum safety for runners in case of encountering adverse weather conditions. It is recommended that the main and auxiliary materials of the clothing be fleece, wool, or other materials with insulating and quick-drying properties. The weight of the insulating top should not be less than 200g (based on men's size M standard).

Running Pants, Compression Tights, or A Combination of Shorts + Compression Leg Sleeves

For the Gaoligong Ultra, the course traverses forests with dense undergrowth along the trail. Runners need to protect their entire legs to avoid injuries from plants or other organisms. Runners can choose suitable combinations based on their personal preferences, such as sports trousers, compression tights, or shorts with compression leg sleeves.

Light Source (Headlamp or Flashlight)

Runners need to prepare light sources according to the requirements for their respective categories in the mandatory equipment list. A brightness of 200 lumens or above is recommended. Runners should determine the need for spare batteries based on the light source's battery life and their estimated race time. It is recommended that runners carry at least 2 sets of batteries for each night.

3.5 Withdrawal and Return Process

· Unless injured, runners cannot withdraw from the race outside designated checkpoints. Runners deciding to withdraw must inform the checkpoint manager or notify the race command center of their decision.

· Runners must check in at each checkpoint before its cut-off time. Those who fail to check in on time will be considered as having withdrawn from the race.

· If deciding to withdraw between two checkpoints, runners must proceed to the nearest checkpoint and claim their withdrawal there.

· Withdrawn runners must allow staff to mark their race bib in the designated area. They should keep their bib safe, as it serves as proof for shuttle services, race supplies, medical services, etc.

· Runners who start more than 15 minutes later than the specified start time and haven't passed the starting point (timing equipment) will be considered as withdrawn.

· Medical and rescue personnel have the authority to force runners to withdraw based on their physical condition.

· Runners found without mandatory equipment during random checks at the start/finish or on the course will be forced to withdraw. Runners refusing or failing mandatory equipment checks will also be forced to withdraw.

· Runners who do not start at the specified time frame will be forced to withdraw.

· Withdrawal return procedure:

a. Withdrawn runners may take the official shuttle service from designated aid stations back to the finish line.

b. Runners who withdraw at other stations and do not require medical evacuation must proceed to the nearest shuttle station to take transport back to the finish line.

c. At remote aid stations accessible only by small or off-road vehicles:

§ If conditions allow, race officials will arrange transport for withdrawn runners when the station closes.

3.7 Reporting, Appeals, and Arbitration

· The event has an arbitration committee to resolve race disputes. The committee consists of the event organizer, operator, race director, chief referee, runner representatives, and relevant personnel as requested by the race director.

· The arbitration committee accepts reports of rule violations by runners. Only real-name reports from the reporter themselves are accepted, and evidence of the violation must be provided before the end of the respective race category. Photos, videos, and audio recordings can serve as evidence. The committee will investigate and make a ruling, which will be publicly announced through official channels.

· Any objections to race results, referee decisions, or runner eligibility must be submitted in writing to the arbitration committee within 24 hours after the race ends.

· Appeal process: Appealing runners must submit via email within 10 days after the race ends to gaoligong@expewise.com.

· The arbitration committee has the authority to make rulings on all timing-related disagreements during the race within the specified time limits. Their decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

4. Race Organization

4.1 Race Bib

· The organizing committee will announce the race numbers before the event. Runners can check their assigned race number on the official website of the race. Additionally, the committee will notify runners via email and SMS. For any inquiries, runners are advised to promptly contact the organizing committee.

· To collect their race bibs, runners must present the following documents:

§ A valid identification document matching their registration details.

§ All mandatory equipment as required by the event.

§ Medical certification: Runners must submit a qualified electrocardiogram (ECG) report issued by a recognized medical institution within three months prior to the race. Race bibs will not be issued without a valid ECG report.

· Runners must wear their race bib on the front of their chest or abdomen throughout the entire race, ensuring it remains clearly visible. The bib must be worn on the outermost layer of clothing and cannot be attached to the legs or race pack. Altering, concealing, or modifying the race number or runner’s name is prohibited. The race bib also serves as an identification credential for accessing race services such as shuttle transport, aid stations, medical assistance, and baggage retrieval. Unless explicitly directed by race officials, runners must not remove their bib at any time. Discarding the race bib will result in disqualification.

4.2 Baggage Storage

· MGU (168 km): Each runner will receive one 30L storage bag and two drop bags before the race. The storage bag will be deposited at the start and transported to the finish after the runner starts. The drop bags will be transported to CP7 (Da Hao Ping) and CP12 (Qiao Jie Cun) for use at designated changing stations. After use, they will be returned to the finish.

· RCE (120 km): Each runner will receive one 30L storage bag and one drop bag before the race. The storage bag will be deposited at the start and transported to the finish after the runner starts. The drop bag will be transported to CP7 (Da Hao Ping) for use at the designated changing station and later returned to the finish.

· THT (55 km) & TCZ (35 km): Each runner will receive one 30L storage bag before the race, which will be deposited at the start line and transported to the finish line after the runner starts.

· GEP (16 km): Each runner will receive one 30L storage bag, which will be stored at the start/finish.

· Runners must retrieve their storage bags within two hours after completing the race. To collect their bag, they must present their race bib. Bags retrieved after the designated must be collected at a designated location as specified by the organizing committee.

· Due to logistical constraints, there may be delays in transporting drop bags back to the finish for MGU and RCE runners. While the committee guarantees that all bags will be transported to the finish line by the end of the race, immediate availability upon a runner’s arrival cannot be assured.

· The organizing committee will only transport the official race storage and drop bags. Trekking poles must not be placed in storage bags. The committee will not inspect or register the contents of the bags and will not be responsible for lost or damaged items. Runners are advised not to store valuable items in their bags.

4.3 Race Course

· The course will be marked using flags, reflective stickers, flashing lights, directional signs, and fabric markers.

· Before the race, the organizing committee will provide an electronic version of the race course, which runners can download based on their category.

· During the race, if a runner does not see a course marker within 300 meters, they must use their pre-downloaded race route on their phone to verify their location. If off-course, they must return to the last confirmed race marker.

· The organizing committee reserves the right to modify race routes, start times, and cut-off times as necessary.

4.4 Aid Stations

· The organizing committee ensures that refreshments and food are provided at supply stations along the race route for runners to consume on-site. Drinking water and functional beverages are available for runners to refill their personal water bottles and hydration packs. Bringing personal water containers and utensils is mandatory. Before leaving a supply station, runners must carefully check if they have sufficient food and drinks to sustain them until reaching the next supply station.

· Only runners who have been checked and are wearing clearly visible race numbers are permitted to enter supply stations and rest areas.

· Detailed information regarding supplies will be announced prior to the race and published in the race manual. A complete list of supply stations and the provisions and services offered at each location will be available in the relevant section of the official website.

4.5 Rest Areas

· MGU (168 km) runners will have rest areas equipped with beds and blankets at CP7 and CP12. RCE (120 km) runners will have a rest area at CP7. These areas are for short-term rest only and cannot be used for overnight stays.

· THT (55 km), TCZ (35 km), and GEP (16 km) runners will not have designated rest areas with beds and blankets.

4.6 Medical Assistance

· Medical Rescue Team is composed of ambulances, doctors, nurses, and medical volunteers, responsible for medical operations at supply stations and nearby areas, and emergency transfers to designated hospitals. Mountain Rescue Team is composed of professional rescuers and rescue vehicles, responsible for rescue operations at fixed points along mountain sections of the course.

· The organizing committee has established medical and rescue support stations along the event route. These stations are equipped with radio or telephone communication facilities to coordinate with the Event Command Center regarding medical rescue matters (relevant contact numbers will be published in the event manual and printed on runners' bibs). A medical rescue team will remain on duty at the Event Command Center throughout the event.

· The task of medical rescue support stations is to assist any runner in danger.

· Runners in distress or with serious injuries must independently decide whether to request assistance from safety support stations through any of the following methods:

§ Proceed to a medical rescue point on their own.

§ Call the event command center.

§ Request assistance from other runners to obtain safety support.

§ Use the emergency assistance procedure (dial 120/110).

· All runners have the responsibility to assist those in distress and report the situation to safety support personnel.

· When unable to contact the event command center, runners may directly call for rescue services (especially if they find themselves in an area where only emergency calls can be made). Emergency rescue numbers in China: 110 or 120.

· It should be noted that any rescue operation based on environmental and race-related emergencies requires runners to wait patiently, and the waiting time is usually longer than psychologically expected. In such situations, the safety of runners depends on the quality of the mandatory equipment they carry.

· All event staff, medical personnel, first aid personnel, search and rescue teams, official guides, and relevant personnel designated by the organizing committee have the authority to:

§ Request a runner to withdraw from the race if deemed unfit to continue.

§ Require runners to use mandatory equipment.

§ Assist runners in distress to evacuate by any means.

§ Guide runners to accept treatment plans more suitable for their needs.

· When runners contact medical or rescue personnel for assistance, it is considered that they have transferred their decision-making authority regarding race participation to others and consequently agree to accept any decisions made by those who have gained this authority.

· If at any time a runner needs to receive intravenous drip treatment, it is considered an automatic withdrawal from the race.

· During the event, medical stations will be set up at various supply points along the course and at the finish line. Runners facing serious health issues can seek help from these medical stations. Based on the treatment capabilities available on-site, medical station personnel will provide basic treatment to runners.

· All runners must stay within the correct course boundaries along the route, including when sleeping. Once a runner leaves the course boundaries without authorization, any safety issues will no longer be the responsibility of the organizing committee. If unable to contact race headquarters, runners should directly call emergency services.

4.7 Withdrawals & Shelter

· The event only arranges shuttle vehicles for runner collection at supply stations with designated cut-off times (cut-off stations).

· At non-cut-off stations, the organizing committee will arrange vehicles as quickly as possible to transport withdrawn runners to the nearest cut-off/shelter station with shuttle services for collection.

4.8 Environmental Protection

By registering for any category of the Gaoligong Ultra race course, runners implicitly agree to respect the ecological environment of all areas traversed during the event. Particular attention must be paid to the following points:

· Strictly prohibit discarding trash (gel tubes, paper products, organic debris, plastic packaging items, etc.) on the race course.

· The event organizing committee recommends that all runners carry personal trash bags to store waste and discarded items along the course until disposing of them in trash bins at aid stations.

· Follow the course markings to proceed along the designated route. Do not take shortcuts. Using unmarked shortcuts will damage the geological conditions of these areas.

· Aid stations do not provide disposable utensils. Runners must carry their own utensils (collapsible bowls, portable chopsticks or forks). Single-use packaged items such as water bottles are prohibited from being taken away from aid stations.

4.9 Anti-Doping

All runners have the obligation to undergo anti-doping control checks before, during, and after the race. If a runner refuses or is absent for the relevant anti-doping checks, they will be subject to penalties equivalent to those for using prohibited substances, including withdrawal from the race, disqualification of race results, and permanent revocation of eligibility to participate.

4.10 Insurance

· The organizing committee will purchase personal accident insurance for all runners and event service personnel during the race period. The coverage details will be announced before the race.

· If a runner's registration information is incomplete or inaccurate, resulting in the inability to purchase insurance or rendering the insurance invalid, the responsibility lies with the runner.

· The insurance purchased by the organizing committee is personal accident insurance. Adverse consequences due to personal illness or physical conditions are not covered by accident insurance.

· If runners have special needs, they may purchase suitable supplementary insurance on their own. However, the insurance terms must include coverage for search, rescue, and evacuation services within China. Runners are free to choose their own insurance provider.

§ The method of evacuation and choice of medical facilities (hospitals) are entirely decided by search and rescue and medical personnel.

§ Costs incurred from special search and rescue and evacuation methods are the responsibility of the person receiving assistance. Runners are responsible for creating a personal file and providing it to their insurance company by the specified date.

Note: Costs arising from helicopter evacuation are borne by the runner. The choice of evacuation method is entirely decided by the race organizing committee, with the runner's safety as the primary consideration.

4.11 Image and Copyright Rights

· The organizing committee owns the copyright of all race images and videos containing runners' likenesses taken during the event. The committee may exercise related rights, and only the committee has the authority to transfer the usage rights of these images through certification or authorization.

· All runners declare that they waive their rights of publicity related to this event. Therefore, runners will not claim any rights or benefits regarding the use of their likeness by the race organizing committee and its partners. Only the race organizing committee has the right to transfer the usage rights of likenesses to the media, and such transfers must be implemented through certification and proof of rights.

All communications or image usage related to this event must respect the official event names and registered trademarks, and may only be used under the condition of obtaining official permission from the organizing committee.

4.12 Independent Sponsorship

Runners who accept independent sponsorship may only display sponsor logos on their clothing and equipment worn during the race. It is prohibited to use any other promotional tools (flags, banners, etc.) at any location along the race course (including start and finish areas). Violators will be subject to penalties.

4.13 Personal Data Protection Policy

· All personal information provided by runners during registration will be strictly used for internal race management-related matters. This information includes, but is not limited to, name, phone number, and email address.

· Unless runners provide written consent, their personal information will not be used for any other purposes.

· All runners can adjust and modify the information they have provided to the organizing committee. If runners wish to access their personal race information, please send an email to the organizing committee at: gaoligong@expewise.com, and include the runner's name and race number in the email.
