The story of last year's RCE winner - Chinese professional trail runner Shen Jiasheng
Click here for the article in Hong Kong's South China Morning Post which tells the story of last year's RCE winner Shen Jiasheng, a young professional trail runner from Yunnan Province. Since last year's Galigong by UTMB Shen has done extremely well - this year he won Hong Kong 100 and last year came sixth at UTMB's OCC.

Samantha Chan – “badass” from Hong Kong
Samantha Chan’s smile lit up the Gobi desert during Ultra Gobi race last year. Smiling and laughing, usually at herself, is something this Hong Kong runner does a lot.(Image: Lloyd Belcher Visuals) She will laugh if you call her elite athlete, but her results at 100km distance qualify her for elite title: 13th at TDS® last year, winner of mixed team Trailwalker 100km, 10th at Hong Kong 100, 9th at The North Face 100 Hong Kong, winner of Kanas 100km in Xinjiang. There are other wins and podium places that she struggles to remember. Samantha cries and laughs in measure during races, so much so, that she calls herself “emotionally weak”, but Michael Wardian, an elite US runner, who raced the 400km Ultra Gobi together with Samantha, disagrees: “Ma

From ekiden to trail running - Japan's top runner Ruy Ueda
Japan has a very strong and proud running culture – Japanese runners used to dominate marathons in the 1960s and amateur running is hugely popular in Japan. The most famous race in Japan is a long-distance relay called Ekiden - teams from all over the country compete in this remarkable race – cities against cities, universities against universities, schools against schools. These races are often televised live, attracting huge audiences. The young Japanese runner Ruy Ueda, who competed in Ekiden at the highest level, has the best result at UTMB of any Asian runner – he was second at CCC in 2016. Ruy-san is very ambitious and a great talent – he is the winner and record holder of Japan’s most important mountain race – Hasetsune Cup. At Gaoligong he will face

Japan's Kaori Niwa - my hobbies are running, horse riding and skiing!
Kaori Niwa is our Japanese elite runner – she is Japanese Skyrunning Champion and her best result is last years 4th place at UTMB, which she remarkably achieved with a broken wrist. Kaori is an all-round athlete – she used to compete in dressage (horse riding), and in addition to running she is an excellent ski mountaineer. Kaori always seems to battle adversity in races – broken wrist at UTMB, and now an attack of anaemia at the recent Hong Kong 100, which prevented her from doing well. She promises to be in top form at Gaoligong by UTMB, and she is looking forward to spicy food in Yunnan. Q:Gaoligong / A:Kaori Niwa Kaori, you just ran HK 100, but it did not go well, you were 20th? What went wrong? Kaori: I had stomach problems, and I also h

Jason and Meredith: THT Runners-Up
USA’s elite athletes Jason Schlarb and Meredith Edwards – both second in Gaoligong by UTMB THT (55KM), talk about how Gaoligong by UTMB® compares with UTMB, about Chinese runners, the Flying Tigers. Jason Schlarb: Hard Rock champion, Run Rabbit Run champion, Zion 100 champion, 4th at UTMB. Meredith Edwards: 10th at CCC ® in 2015 and then second at TDS® in 2016. Congratulations, you are both second, are you happy, or not? We are very happy with our results, but we are not in the best shape right now, to be honest. Why? We live at elevation, 6,500 feet, in Durango, Colorado, but now it is all under snow, so we ski tour instead, but this means you only train going up, not going down! Did you feel UTMB connection at

“Soul Runner” Hayden Hawks – I love running
Hayden Hawks sent me a message: “I saw your post on Facebook about Qi Min, the Chinese runner, which distance is he doing at Gaoligong? It would be so cool to race against him! He sounds awesome!”Hayden was disappointed when I told him that Qi Min will be running the 100 mile MGU, not the 125km RCE. Hayden can relate to Qi Min, even though they do not speak each other’s languages and one is American from Utah, the other Chinese from Yunnan – they are both former elite road runners who changed to running in the mountains, they are kindred spirits. In this interview, this friendly young American tells how excited he be starting his career as a professional trail runner and how much he is looking forward to racing in Gaoligong. Hello Hayden, how has training

Sunmaya Budha - the 19 year-old Nepali girl is THT champion
I was very impressed by Sunmaya. She may be a bit shy, but she is already very charismatic. I see her winning the world’s greatest races in the coming 10-15 years, zero doubt. And I hope she can visit Chamonix and run UTMB Mont-Blanc, and also Oman by UTMB race soon. ——Rémi Duchemin (UTMB Organizing Committee)Nineteen-year-old Sunmaya Budha won THT – the 55km division of Gaoligong, coming sixth overall. Thirty-nine seconds faster, and she would have been fifth, and she was just twenty-one minutes behind third-placed male runner. The second placed woman, elite American runner, Meredith Edwards (2016 UTMB TDS runner – up) finished an hour and a half behind Sunmaya.Sunmaya is shy, and she does not say much, her English is still very basic. “Yes, broth

2020 Gaoligong by UTMB®
2020 Gaoligong by UTMB®Located next to the China – Myanmar border, Gaoligong Mountains stretch in a straight line from North to South. Geographically the foothills of the Himalaya, Gaoligong is a reservoir of great biodiversity, harboring some of the best-preserved forests in China, home to clouded leopard, gibbons, bears and red pandas. Gaoligong range is also part of Three Parallel Rivers, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the three great rivers – the Yangtze, the Mekong, and the Salween flow southwards from the Tibetan Plateau towards the Indo-China Peninsula.History here goes back millennia – starting from three thousand years ago, predating the Great Silk Road, caravans travelled across Gaoligong along the great Tea and Horse Trail, which linked Yunnan, Tibet

The Relationship with the People is Special in Gaoligong
The three Ultra Gobi alumni had a very different experience at Gaoligong – Alfie surprised everyone by coming 4th - a month before the race he wanted to pull out, being worried that his lack of fitness will not allow him to get a good result and that the organizers will be disappointed. Daniel Lawson came fifth, but the last year’s champion and Ultra Gobi Champion was not disappointed at all – he said “he was happy to finish”. Michael Wardian continued with bad luck in Chinese races. Just like in Ultra Gobi, stomach problems affected him, and Michael had to pull out. These three runners were impressed by organization of the race, but what really impressed and touched them was welcome they were given by the local people. How did you feel in the
